Electrical faults often give you warning before they become dangerous. Knowing the signs can prevent a fire, a shock, or an expensive failure — and tells you when it's time to stop and call a licensed electrician.
Call an electrician if you notice:
- Burning smell or scorch marks around outlets or the switchboard.
- Power points warm to the touch, or that spark when you plug in.
- Frequent tripping of circuits or blown fuses.
- Flickering or dimming lights that aren't a faulty globe.
- Buzzing sounds from switches, outlets, or the board.
- Mild shocks or tingles from appliances or switches.
- An old fuse box with ceramic fuses and no safety switches.
Don't DIY electrical work
In Australia it's illegal — and dangerous — for unlicensed people to do most electrical work. A burning smell or a shock is a stop-now signal: turn off the power at the board if safe, and call a licensed electrician.
