Getting your mowing schedule right is the single biggest thing you can do for a healthy Sydney lawn. Cut too often and you stress the grass; leave it too long and you scalp it when you finally mow.
The general rule
Through Sydney's warm growing season (roughly September to April), most lawns do best with a weekly or fortnightly cut. In the cooler months, growth slows right down and you can stretch to every three or four weeks.
Never remove more than a third
Whatever the schedule, only take off about one-third of the blade height at a time. Removing more shocks the grass, invites weeds, and leaves it patchy and yellow. If the lawn has gotten away from you, bring it down over two cuts a few days apart.
It depends on your grass type
- Buffalo & Kikuyu (common in Sydney): fast in summer — weekly keeps them tidy.
- Couch: loves the heat, may need weekly cuts in peak summer.
- Fescue: slower, fortnightly is usually plenty.
A regular local gardener will match the schedule to your grass, your soil, and how you use the yard — so it always looks sharp without wasting money on cuts it doesn't need.
