How Often Should You Replace Your Tyres?

Tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road, so knowing when to replace them is one of the simplest ways to stay safe. There's no single number — it comes down to tread, age and condition.

Check the tread depth

In Australia the legal minimum tread is 1.5 mm, but grip and wet-weather braking drop off well before that. Most tyres have small tread-wear indicators moulded into the grooves. When the tread is level with those bars, the tyre is worn out.

Watch the age, not just the wear

Rubber hardens over time even if the tread looks fine. As a general guide, tyres older than five to six years should be inspected, and most manufacturers suggest replacing them by around ten years regardless of tread. You can find the age from the four-digit date code on the sidewall.

Signs it's time

  • Tread worn to the indicator bars or below 3 mm.
  • Cracks, bulges, or cuts in the sidewall.
  • Vibration, pulling, or uneven wear across the tread.

If you're unsure, a quick tyre check is free and only takes a few minutes. It's cheap peace of mind for something this important.

What Do the Numbers on Your Tyre Mean?

The string of numbers and letters on your tyre sidewall isn't random. Once you know what each part means, buying the right replacement is much easier.

Breaking down 205/55 R16 91V

  • 205 — the tyre width in millimetres.
  • 55 — the aspect ratio: the sidewall height as a percentage of the width.
  • R — radial construction (almost all modern tyres).
  • 16 — the wheel diameter in inches.
  • 91 — the load index (how much weight the tyre can carry).
  • V — the speed rating.

Why it matters

Fitting tyres that match your car's placard keeps handling, braking and your speedo accurate. Going too narrow, too tall, or under the correct load rating can affect safety and even your rego.

Where to find the right size

Your recommended tyre size is on the tyre placard, usually inside the driver's door frame or in the owner's manual. If you're not sure, bring the car in and we'll match the correct size and rating for you.

Why Wheel Alignment Matters (and the Signs You Need One)

Wheel alignment sets the angles of your wheels so they point exactly where they should. It's easy to overlook, but bad alignment costs you money in worn tyres and extra fuel.

Signs your alignment is out

  • The car pulls to one side on a straight, flat road.
  • The steering wheel sits off-centre when driving straight.
  • Uneven or rapid tyre wear, often on one edge.
  • Steering feels loose or wanders.

What causes it

Hitting a kerb or pothole, worn suspension parts, or simply everyday driving over time can knock your alignment out. Sydney's potholes are a common culprit.

Why it's worth fixing

Correct alignment means even tyre wear, better handling, safer braking and improved fuel economy. It also protects the investment you just made in new tyres. A good rule of thumb is to check alignment whenever you fit new tyres, or at least once a year.

How Often Should You Service Your Car?

Regular servicing keeps your car reliable, safe and worth more at resale. How often depends on how you drive and what the manufacturer recommends.

The usual intervals

Most cars are serviced every 10,000 – 15,000 km or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Check your log book for the exact schedule for your make and model.

Log book servicing protects your warranty

If your car is still under warranty, sticking to the log book schedule is essential. A qualified independent workshop can carry out log book servicing without voiding your new-car warranty, often at a lower price than the dealer.

Don't skip the small stuff

  • Oil and filter changes keep the engine healthy.
  • Brake, coolant and tyre checks catch problems early.
  • Regular servicing usually costs far less than the repairs it prevents.

If you're overdue or unsure where your car is at, book it in for a check and we'll let you know exactly what it needs.

Can a Punctured Tyre Be Repaired?

A puncture doesn't always mean a new tyre. Whether it can be safely repaired depends on the size and location of the damage.

When a repair is safe

Small punctures — generally up to 6 mm — in the central tread area can usually be repaired with a proper plug-and-patch from the inside. This is the safe, long-lasting method, not just a plug on its own.

When it can't be repaired

  • Damage in the sidewall or shoulder.
  • Cuts or holes larger than 6 mm.
  • A tyre that was driven on while flat and is now damaged inside.
  • Multiple punctures close together.

Don't keep driving on a flat

Driving even a short distance on a flat tyre can destroy the internal structure, turning a repairable puncture into a replacement. If you can, stop safely and swap to your spare or call for help. Bring the tyre in and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be saved.

Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

Your brakes are the most important safety system on your car. Catching wear early keeps you safe and prevents a cheap job turning into an expensive one.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Squealing — many pads have a wear indicator that squeals when they're getting low.
  • Grinding — often means the pads are gone and metal is contacting the disc. Stop driving and get it checked.
  • Soft or spongy pedal — can point to air or a leak in the brake fluid system.
  • Vibration when braking — often warped discs.
  • Pulling to one side — uneven braking or a sticking caliper.

Why early matters

Worn pads left too long will damage the discs, which are far more expensive to replace. Regular brake checks — usually done as part of a service — catch this before it costs you.

If anything feels off when you brake, book it in straight away. It's never worth the risk.

How to Make Your Tyres Last Longer

Tyres are a real cost of running a car, so getting the most out of them makes sense. A few easy habits go a long way.

Keep them at the right pressure

Under-inflated tyres wear faster, use more fuel and run hot. Check pressures at least monthly (when cold) and match the placard inside your door frame.

Rotate and align

  • Rotate tyres roughly every 10,000 km so they wear evenly.
  • Keep your wheel alignment correct to avoid one-sided wear.
  • Have wheels balanced when new tyres are fitted.

Drive a little smoother

Hard acceleration, heavy braking and fast cornering all scrub rubber off quickly. Smooth, steady driving is easier on tyres — and on fuel. Avoid kerbs and potholes where you safely can.

Check them regularly

A quick monthly look for uneven wear, cuts or bulges catches problems early. Combine that with regular rotation and correct pressures and your tyres will reward you with thousands of extra kilometres.

What Is a Pink Slip and When Do You Need One?

If you're in NSW, you've probably heard of a "pink slip". It's a common source of confusion, so here's the simple explanation.

What it is

A pink slip is an eSafety inspection — a safety check that confirms your vehicle is roadworthy. The results are sent electronically to Transport for NSW, so you can renew your registration.

When you need one

  • Most petrol and diesel light vehicles over five years old need one every year before renewing rego.
  • Newer vehicles (under five years) usually don't need one, but always check your renewal notice.

What's checked

The inspection covers key safety items: brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts, windscreen and more. If something fails, you'll be told what needs fixing, and the vehicle can be re-checked once repaired.

Make it easy

We carry out authorised pink slip inspections, usually while you wait, and if anything needs attention we can often sort it on the spot. Book a time that suits and we'll take care of it.

Why Is My Check-Engine Light On?

Few dashboard lights cause more worry than the check-engine light. The good news: it's a prompt to investigate, not always a sign of disaster.

Common causes

  • A loose or faulty fuel cap (surprisingly common).
  • Oxygen or airflow sensor issues.
  • Spark plug or ignition faults.
  • Catalytic converter or emissions problems.

Steady light vs flashing light

A steady light usually means "get it checked soon". A flashing light means a more serious issue — often a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter — so ease off and get it looked at promptly.

How diagnostics help

Modern cars store a fault code when the light comes on. We plug in a scanner, read the code, and use it to pinpoint the problem instead of guessing. That saves you money by fixing the actual cause the first time.

If your light is on, book a diagnostic check. Even if it turns out minor, it's better to know.

Choosing the Right Tyres for a 4WD or SUV

4WD and SUV tyres come in a few distinct types, and picking the right one makes a big difference to comfort, grip and running costs.

The three main types

  • Highway terrain (H/T) — quiet, comfortable and fuel-efficient. Ideal if you mostly drive on sealed roads.
  • All terrain (A/T) — a versatile middle ground with more off-road grip while staying civilised on the highway.
  • Mud terrain (M/T) — aggressive tread for serious off-road use, but noisier and thirstier on the road.

Match the tyre to your driving

If you tow, travel long distances, or rarely leave the bitumen, highway or all-terrain tyres usually make the most sense. If you regularly hit trails, sand or mud, a more aggressive tyre earns its keep.

Don't forget load and size

Heavier vehicles and towing need the correct load rating. We can talk through how and where you drive and recommend a tyre that balances grip, comfort and cost for your 4WD or SUV.

How to Tell If Your Car Battery Is Dying

A flat battery always seems to strike at the worst time. The good news is that batteries usually give warning signs before they fail completely.

Warning signs

  • The engine cranks slowly or hesitates when starting.
  • Headlights and dash lights look dim, especially at idle.
  • Electrical gremlins — flickering lights, radio resets.
  • A clicking sound but no start.

How long do batteries last?

Most car batteries last around three to five years. Heat is hard on them, so in Australia's climate the shorter end of that range is common. If yours is getting on in years, it's worth a test before it lets you down.

Get it tested

A battery test takes only a few minutes and tells you the real health of your battery and charging system. If it needs replacing, we can test, supply and fit a quality battery on the spot — so you're not left stranded in a car park.

Summer vs Winter: Getting Your Car Road-Ready

Australian summers and winters both test your car in different ways. A little seasonal attention keeps everything running smoothly.

Getting ready for summer

  • Check the coolant — overheating is far more likely in the heat.
  • Test the air-con and consider a re-gas if it's not as cold as it used to be.
  • Check tyre pressures, which rise with heat, and watch for wear before road-trip season.
  • Make sure the battery is healthy — heat shortens battery life.

Getting ready for winter

  • Check tyres for tread — wet roads need good grip and braking.
  • Test wipers and top up washer fluid for rain and glare.
  • Check all your lights, since you'll be driving in the dark more often.
  • Have the brakes checked before the wet season sets in.

One easy step

A seasonal check rolls most of this into one visit. Book your car in before the weather turns and drive with confidence all year round.
